If the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar were to hand out an award for the tournament’s best defender, Josko Gvardiol would lead the nominations.
The Croatia centre-back is currently third on the clearance chart with 25, fourth in interceptions with seven, ninth in terms of passes, 318, and has the fifteenth most recoveries with 30 so far in the World Cup.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Igor Jovicevic, who during his time at Dinamo Zagreb, was like a ‘sporting father’ to Gvardiol explains to MARCA why the Croatian could become the world’s most expensive defender in history.
“He reminds me of Sergio Ramos. If he misses, he picks himself up. I’m a coach who believes in young players. If you see a player with that potential you have to stick with him at any cost, even if the price is that you get sacked.
“They already turned down 80 million from Chelsea last summer.I think the transfer, if Leipzig push for it, can go up to 100 million euros, which would make him the most expensive defender in history.
“He could play for any top club. PSG, Barcelona, if it were up to me, I would [want him] go to Real Madrid.”

Kaka, former Real Madrid player and World Cup winner with Brazil in 2002, has complained that many Brazilians do not support their national team and do not treat football legends as they deserve to be treated.
Having won every major prize in football, Kaka believes several of his compatriots do not receive the adulation they deserve for what they have accomplished in the beautiful game.
“Ronaldo Nazario in Brazil is just a fat man walking down the street,” Kaka stated.
“It’s strange to say this, but many Brazilians don’t support Brazil. It happens sometimes. If you see Ronaldo walking around here, you will say ‘wow’, he has something different here. In Brazil, he’s just a fat guy walking down the street.
“Of course, many Brazilians love Ronaldo. I love Ronaldo, but the way he is respected in Brazil and abroad is different, I see more respect for him outside the country than there.”
