British Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan gave the figure on Tuesday, the morning after the nation’s longest-reigning monarch was buried at Windsor Castle.
Donelan said her department was still “crunching the numbers” as to how many people had queued for hours in London to process past the Queen’s coffin at Westminster Hall, but that she believed they numbered around 250,000.

Despite being praised for their maturity throughout the events surrounding the funeral of their great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, the siblings had a brief moment of fun where George appeared to pinch his sister.
The family was departing the funeral service at Westminster Abbey, heading to cars that would take them to Wellington Arch.
As they made their way, lip reader Jeremy Freeman spotted the hilarious sibling moment of respite on such a heavy day – and Camilla’s surly comment.

Two teenagers were arrested after running red lights, crossing lanes into oncoming traffic and even allegedly ramming a police car at one stage before the manic chase ended in a Redbank shopping centre carpark.
Police allege that the white Mercedes Benz the suspects were travelling in was believed to be stolen from a Balmoral home a few days ago.
But it was recognised with false plates in Redbank around 9am.
Witnesses at Redbank Plaza told 7NEWS it was remarkable that no one was hurt, with the car narrowly missing a young family.

A Queensland Ambulance Service helicopter is on its way to the crash site on the Flinders Highway about 400km west of Townsville, according to the Townsville Bulletin.
The two people in the car, one in their 70s and the other in their 80s, were entrapped in the vehicle following the crash at 3.45pm.
A QAS spokesperson told the Bulletin that both crash victims were stable while there were no reports on the truck driver’s status.
The crash forced the closure of the Flinders Highway, which runs from Townsville to Mount Isa.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the decision – which will also cover taxis and ride-share services in the Sunshine State – on Twitter on Tuesday.
“From midnight tonight, masks will no longer be required on public transport, in rideshares and in taxis,” she said.
It comes just a day after both NSW and South Australia announced they too would be scrapping the mask mandates – NSW will officially remove it on Wednesday, September 21, while the mandate was dropped in SA today.

The pop superstar has unveiled her plans for “Someone’s Ugly Daughter”, the angsty album she recorded with Chick.
The All I Want for Christmas singer first revealed the existence of the album in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
“I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time,” she wrote. “You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image.
“They could be angry, angsty and messy ….while every move I made was so calculated and manicured.
“I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery.”

A release date is yet to be set.
Chiara Hocking posted the video to TikTok, with the on-screen caption reading: “POV: your car makes a loud bang while you’re driving.”
Hocking had just pulled over on Beechworth-Wangaratta Road in regional Victoria and had moved to the safety of another car after she started to hear disconcerting noises coming from her Nissan Micra as she was driving.
