Holocaust Museum Houston offering free admission Saturday for Human Rights Day – Houston Public Media

Planned programming includes a children’s magic show, bilingual choir performance, a discussion with a holocaust survivor and photo opportunities with the Houston Astros’ World Series championship trophy.

Families visiting Holocaust Museum Houston on Saturday can watch a children’s magic show, listen to a bilingual choir, learn about human rights heroes and take photos with the Houston Astros’ World Series championship trophy – all for free.
The museum, located at 5401 Caroline St., is celebrating Human Rights Day by offering complimentary admission from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The trophy from the Astros’ 2022 title – which they won with key contributions from players from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela – will be on site from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
“The Astros’ diverse team roster illustrates the importance of the immigrant story, what Human Rights Day is all about,” the museum said in a news release.
The lineup for Saturday also includes a discussion with holocaust survivor Anna Steinberger, a magic show performed by second-generation holocaust survivor Hy Penn – nicknamed “The Great Hydini” – and singing in English and Spanish by the Segundo Barrio Children’s Chorus. There also will be bilingual story time sessions, arts and crafts for kids and gallery tours.
The museum’s Human Rights Gallery recognizes civil and human rights leaders such as Dolores Huerta, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malala Yousafzai and also highlights the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, made on Dec. 10, 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly. The declaration proclaims 30 inalienable rights to which every human is entitled regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political persuasion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
Houston-area human rights organizations also will be on hand while hosting programming throughout the day.
Walk-ins are welcome, according to a representative of Holocaust Museum Houston, but community members planning to attend Saturday are encouraged to reserve tickets online at https://hmh.org/events/human-rights-day-2022-12-10-10:00:00/. The website also includes more information about the free event.
